Fast & Furious 7 – Dodge Charger

20180611_183155You may not have seen the movie, but I am sure you know the car, the Off Road Charger from Fast and Furious 7. Unlike some movie cars, this one has a very important history and was built on a real Trophy Truck chassis so it can walk the walk when it comes to performance.

How did we buy an actual movie car you ask? Well, we have been in touch with the people that actually built the cars for the Fast and Furious franchise while building the Fast 4 Charger you have seen elsewhere on our site. While talking with them one day, we were informed that one of the two surviving Off Road Chargers may be coming up for sale. After some phone calls, financial wrangling and a nail biting transport from California to Florida, it is finally here.

Here is the lowdown on what it is. The body is actually a 1969 F code (318) Charger which has been heavily modified to fit over a real Trophy Truck race chassis. Fiberglass fenders, quarters, hood and truck lid were modified extensively by the capable people in Hollywood to make room for the equally large General Grabber race tires. This particular car was one of the first few hero cars built and was used as the “Green Screen” car. Many others were built after this one, most were destroyed during filming, however, it is rumored one “stunt” car survived as well.

All cars that were built were serial numbered and logged to document where they came from and what they were used for. After providing this number to the builder, its origins and job onscreen were passed along to us here at Muscle Or Performance Auto Restoration.

Question: If you buy a 69 F-code Charger, what history can the car have that would send its value through the roof? Yes, you guessed it, if it was used as an original TV series General Lee. The story goes that a bunch of wrecked General Lee’s were saved for parts during filming in the 70’s/early 80’s. So, when the movie shop needed to build these Off Road Chargers, they contacted the person that saved the old General Lees. Since they only needed the roof, firewall, rockers and tops of the quarters, those wrecked Generals were a great answer. This is one of the few Off Road Chargers built using an old General Lee from the TV series.

This car originally did not have a motor or transmission since it was used for “Green Screen” duties. After filming was done, an LS3 and TH400 from a wrecked car was installed into this one making it capable of running and driving. It lived in California for quite a while after the movie was released, making occasional public appearances and running around the desert from time to time. Since it’s arrival at Muscle Or Performance Auto Restoration, we have given it a thorough cleaning and inspection. A few items need attention due to sitting for so long, but the car is in great shape and is a beast. It swallows up bumps with ease, and is surprisingly easy to drive. Idling around the yard is insulting for this machine. It is designed to race. Full throttle through the desert or across a movie set. Unfortunately, she now will live a pampered, safe life due to its history and movie heritage.
