We don’t normally work on anything other than 68-70 Chargers and Daytonas, however, when this 1970 Road Runner was offered to us by a close friend, we just couldn’t pass buying it. It is a real 70 Road Runner, Air Grabber, Auto on the column, F8 green exterior with a F8 green bench seat interior. It is very rust and damage free, having been used for racing most of its life. The previous owner had installed a 500″ RB 440, stall convertor, 3:55 gears as well as headers, big holly carb etc. The car ran 11:teens with 3.91 rear gears, but with the 3.55 gears, time slips dropped to 11:40’s. As the previous owner described, the car was tired and worn out, actually being scary/dangerous to drive. He employed a local shop to disassemble the drivetrain for a rebuild and to twin turbo the engine. The car was quickly disassembled, subframe connectors welded in and the underside coated with bedliner for sound deadening. This is where the project stalled… for 5 years. I bought the unfinished project, freshened up the engine, trans, rear end, brakes, suspension as well as repainting the engine compartment. I also installed new 3.91 gears and a Detroit TruTrac differential as this car had destroyed many spider gears in the past. One big improvement we made was the installation of a FiTech fuel injection system. With fuel injection, the car starts right up, no matter how long it has sat, idles effortlessly and has much improved throttle response. Unfortunately, once we got the car completed, it was sold to a collector up North and we didn’t have a chance to take it to the track. I did have the previous owner take it for a drive before it left and he did mention that it drove very well and he thought it felt quicker/faster than it was before.
